Custom Mouthguards

A mouthguard is a dental appliance meant to protect your mouth from the effects of clenching and grinding. Mouthguards also reduce the effects of dental disorders like TMJ and protect the teeth from impact, for example during contact sports. However, for mouthguards to work effectively, they must have a custom fit.

For 50 years, Annex Dentistry has been making custom mouthguards for patients in the St. George and Bloor area. We have a state-of-the-art facility with the latest technology and a full-time sterilization and sanitation team that ensures we always maintain the highest standards of service.

Types of Custom Mouthguards at Annex Dentistry

There are two main types of mouthguards characterized by function:

Night Mouth Guard for Grinding Teeth (Parafunctional)

As the name suggests, these types of guards are used by patients who exhibit teeth clenching or bruxism. We can make night mouth guards for patients who grind their teeth at night. Our parafunctional mouth guards help to protect teeth from getting more worn down, they will also improve sleep quality and help with other teeth-grinding effects like jaw pain and headaches.

Sports Guards

These types of mouthguards are specifically meant for professional athletes or those who play sports. Unlike nightguards or parafunctional guards, they feature thicker material and are ideal for all types of sports.

At Annex Dentistry, we make sports mouthguards that will fit your mouth perfectly and cushion your jaw and teeth from injury during sporting or related physical activities. Book an appointment to have the following sports guards made:

  • Boxing mouth guard
  • Football mouth guard
  • Rugby mouthguard
  • Basketball mouthguard
  • Hockey mouthguard
  • And more!

Other Custom Mouthguards

Mouth guards can be categorized in many other ways: based on their color, precise thickness(6-7mm thick optimum protection), number of layers (dual-layer impact protection), comfort levels, etc.

Braces and Mouthguard: Can You Wear a Mouthguard if You Have Braces?

If you play sports or have teeth-grinding issues, can you still wear a mouthguard? Well, regular dental mouthguards don’t work for individuals undergoing orthodontic treatment, those with braces as mouthguards can limit the movement of teeth, defying the function of braces.

Can You Wear a Mouthguard When You Have a Retainer?

Retainers are post-ortho treatment appliances that maintain the bite achieved by braces or other ortho treatments. In some instances, an Essex appliance (an ortho retainer) can be used as a “day guard”.

The appliance still allows a patient to talk well and still protects their teeth from grinding or clenching during the day when engaging in stressful activities that may trigger teeth grinding such as working or driving. However, at night, a mouth guard with thicker material is needed to absorb the forces produced by teeth grinding throughout the night.
